I've been looking around for a video camera something to make quick and dirty vids when I don't have the time or inclination to do Dslr stuff. There's the Canon AX 10, Canon XF 105, Sony HVR-A1, Sony DCR-VX2200 and the Panasonic one. Really I was thinking hard about the two Canons. In the end I decided to get the new Iphone. The video seems plenty good enough for the web and if I can produce something as pretty as this http://vimeo.com/32407718 I'll be happy.

As much as people like to talk about nice kit and technique what you are really doing is waiting for the light. In my case I invariably want nice light. This leaf is doing in seconds what the sun does in hours. Sometimes to looks great and sometimes not. If you think that what you are taking pictures of is interesting but the pictures are not look good come back another time or wait.

If you are a nikon boy 300mm F4 and a D5100

Then a nice tripod something like a Manfrotto 055XPROB

A nice tripod head, more of that later.

Don't by a big zoom that has is F 5.6 or above, don't buy a cheap tripod.

Soon you will want a D3s and a 600mm F4 but you don't need that to start.

I'm looking for a Druid and have been asking anyone and everyone if they know one. Dani, who's a scientist asked me why I didn't just get someone to dress up in white robes. So I asked her why she didn't make up her data. Nuff said.

A while ago BBC Wildlife Magazine used a picture of a captive mink to lead on an article my wife and I wrote about mink. I questioned their journalistic integrity and now they won't talk to me anymore. In hind sight I should have had nothing to do with them. Looking online at the magazine recently and there are more pictures of captive animals. Why do they think it's acceptable? I'm not sure if I had anything to do with it but nowadays they label the pictures captive etc but it's still wrong.

I was at an exhibition of some photographers stuff when a couple of friends said what a good wildlife photographer the guy was. Half the pictures were of captive animals and I am sure I seemed quite pedantic when I said it wasn't wildlife photography.

I don't really see myself as a wildlife photographer, I see myself as a photojournalist who's interested in the natural world so maybe it's unfair to expect other people to man up and stop faking pictures. But it's the 21st century, everyone has access to some smart kit, so set yourself a challenge and get the real thing.

I just asked Lauren and she thinks only photographers care, she's probably right.

BTW if anyone knows a friendly Druid let me now.

First time in a long time that I've played with a real camera. Went to craig s and tried his new 24 -70 on his D3 amazing set up but god how heavy?

My main camera is a D300s at the moment. Nice little camera. I love the small chip Nikons mainley because it turns my 200-400 into a 300-600 (I know someone is going to tell me that this isn't the case but before you do either you are wrong or I don't care)

Now a 300-600 F4 that you can take on the plane the run round all day without getting tired and use of a mono pod at 1/5 of a sec is a wonderful thing. It can also produce the finest double page spread. It's also much much cheaper than than changing up.

I know I'll want to buy an D4 but if I go full frame apart from the 3500 camera I'll need a 500mm F4 (5500), A new 70-200 (1500) something wide (1500) and I don't think I could not buy a 24 - 70mm .

My next project is going to involve running, I haven't run in 15 years. I don't even run for the bus any more. It will also involve a lot of time which is why I want a small light camera that is good enough. I might get myself a 35 1.8G to make things even lighter.

We went to Marwell Zoo yesterday (Thanks Zeke) It didn't seem a bad zoo and seems to being doing a fair job towards conservation. The main trouble I had with the place was it was filled made up animals. Who has heard of a Bongo? Obviously they have stuck some stripes and horns on a cow.

It amazes me how little I don't know. They had a fair amount of stuff from West and North Africa which I had never heard of. It's obvious that to film something you have to be able to see it and if you are making a wildlife film you would go to the Serengeti or similar. This is a shame. I would like to know more about Bongos and the like. I think it's important to push your limits and knowledge and to educate the masses.

Me I'm off to photograph lions next, but still.

How do you tell a Masai that you are in a rush? There is a Swahili clock (go figure) So I thought I would be done at 11 a.m and in reality I'm watching a baby cow be borne and waiting for it to be able to stand up. I really need to talk to the man who was attacked by the Leopard, I'm sort of in a rush. So the calf stands up and off we head back home. After carrying the calf most of the way back I'm done by 2 and after changing my now blood and after birth stained cloths I'm off.

3 weeks in Tanzania and never a dull day, wonderful.

I've known this tree for around 25 years. First Tawny owl nest I ever photographed was in it. Missed some badgers eating a Bee hive on the side. It's a beautiful tree and it's been dead ever since I first met it.

I've had a wonderful week. Spent a week with the kids saw lots of new Scotland, got drunk with friends. Kids saw Otters and Pine martins. I got some camera traps up and made a start. Got home and watched "once more with feeling" (Buffy) and England won the Rugby. I am very happy.

I think the hardest part of any project is thinking of it and deciding that's what you want to do But it's always wonderful to make a start. Making a start has always meant that I'll finish with something worth having.
